Thermo Hero

Your thermostat that is where it's at. If you want to save money on your heating bills you're gonna have to spend some time with your thermostat. If you use your heating system properly you'll keep your home at a comfortable temperature without wasting fuel or heat - it's a no brainer. As a minimum you should have:

  • a programmer (for controlling the times when you want heating)
  • a wall thermostat (to set the temperature)
  • thermostatic valves on the radiators for per-room control
  • a thermostat on the boiler controlling the temperature for the water that goes around the radiators

How to use your boiler heating system

Advice from the Energy Saving Trust.

I'm out most of the day should I keep the heating on low during the day so it's warm when I get home?

You save energy and therefore money by having the heating only on when it's required. If you can time the heating switch it off half an hour before leaving the house, then to come on before you come back.

Is it more efficient to keep the heating on low all the time?

Generally no. Transition Cambridge have a nice a piece about this.

Should I have the heating on at night?

That depends on how cold your house is. Generally you sleep better when you are cooler (but not freezing) and you can always put more blankets on the bed. We put the wall thermostat down to 7oC at night in the winter so the pipes don't freeze.

Beware of

Leaky houses

If your house isn't insulated it's going to take a lot of energy to heat it as the heat will just be escaping all the time. We have a quest for that! SO LEAKY - DON'T BE DRAFT.
