Getting seeds for free

GROWING STEADY (level 1)

There are a few ways of legitmately getting seeds for free as far as I can tell. Quickly let me tell you how.

1) Ask friends, neighbours and fellow gardeners

Some seed packets have far too many seeds in for anyone with a small plot to grow them all. Most people will readily give or swap seeds especially if they have half a packet of something they grew last season that they... Read full blog post

Fixed my walking boots!

FIX IT DON'T BIN IT (level 3)

I actually fixed my walking boots back in September but I've been making sure that they've stayed fixed before I wrote this blog post. You know - what with the Cobbers fiasco earlier ...

I'd been looking for a product that would fix my shoe and we were taking part in the... Read full blog post

Cobblers to that

FIX IT DON'T BIN IT (level 2)

Once I'd found a cobblers in one of the towns I regularly visit it seemed like a no-brainer to take my holey walking boot to them to get it fixed.

The quote for gluing one shoe was £3! But they couldn't guarantee that it would work. I quickly decided that if I'd forked out for £3 worth of glue and fixed it myself I'd have no idea whether that would work... Read full blog post

9 months of litter picking

KEEPING IT TIDY (level 3)

I say 9 months, but really that means 9 months when I was out for a short walk (usually to the letter box) and remembered to take something to put the litter in. So actually it adds up to 8 different occasions. Not that much really.

I was cycling a lot over the summer.

Excuses aside I'm surprised about the amount of litter I found.

Most of the litter came... Read full blog post

Shampoo search part one - LUSH

SAVE THE ORANGUTAN (level 2)

You remember when I flipped a couple of months ago when I discovered how much palm oil I was consuming. Well I recovered, a bit, enough to do something about it anyway. I'm going to split my experiences into different blog posts to try and keep things simple.

This first post is... Read full blog post

WILDEST HOTEL (level 1)

Been meaning to do this for a while and have finally started! It's a work in progress ...

We had plenty of hollow concrete blocks lying about the place so that seemed like the obvious "frame" material. Then it was "just" a matter of finding a place to stack them and things to fill the holes with. It was the finding a place to stack them that was the stumbing point.

As you can see... Read full blog post

Truly disappointed with myself

SAVE THE ORANGUTAN (level 1)

The SAVE THE ORANGUTAN quest was one of the first ones I put on this website. I feel passionately about saving them, probably something to do with their big cuddly arms. There are less than 76,000 of them left in the wild (stats from 2003/2004 so the numbers will have dropped a lot). I have never met one,... Read full blog post

Nettle Soup

FREE FOOD - FORAGE (level 2)

It was one of those things that I'd always turned my nose up about. I mean eating nettles. Are you off your rocker? I got close enough to a bowl to smell it one day - it didn't smell good. I don't know what happened but one day I just thought I would make nettle soup, I think I was weeding the veggie patch and was weeding out an abundance of nettles to make space for what I though of as real... MEAT LESS MONDAY (level 2)

This is one of my favourite easy to put together vegetarian main meals. This meal is low in fat, delicious, makes about 4 servings and takes no longer than 20 mins to make (if you do the chopping for later ingredients while you cook the others). Ingredients: 1 medium onion 3-5 garlic cloves (or more if that's your thing) 300g Quorn chunks (1 packet from the freezer) 250g fresh... Read full blog post

Litter in the countryside

KEEPING IT TIDY (level 3)

I love where we live. Some days it seems like we are in the middle of nowhere. Other days the sounds (and smells) of the working countryside that surrounds us remind me that friends, neighbours and holiday makers are not so far away after all. Another reminder that "civilisation" isn't far away hits me whenever I venture out of my paradise. The rural lanes are just littered with rubbish - not... Read full blog post
